Hitchhiker’s Guide to the MOS Universe v2.0.7 Compiled & Maintained by DarthVader
Take a deep breath, grab your towel :) and whatever you do DON’T PANIC
Introduction
The Myouterspace (hereto referred to as MOS) Universe is big, really Big, you can’t believe how incredibly mind bogglingly BIG it really is … & its potential is limitless!
MOS is a crucible for the best and the brightest talent in the entertainment industry and has access to significant entertainment industry resources and industry heavyweights. For example, John Eaves (who is responsible for designing many of the ships and props for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek: ENTERPRISE, as well as working on the Star Trek: The Next Generation feature films, including designing the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-E, and Zefram Cochrane's Phoenix along the way) is Governor of one of the MOS galaxy Planets (Anteros). Let alone having the one and only irrepressible William Shatner as one of the founders of this site.
Get involved and stay involved now, you have the chance to get in at the genesis (pun intended ;) of something really BIG!
The ultimate aim of MOS is to release commercial products. MOS is looking to harness your skills and energy to get these projects, worked on by Starships (crewed with a collection of citizens recruited from the various planets) completed and welcome you to join the Galaxy (for a purely social experience) or a Planet that suits your skills. You may very well get recruited to a Starship from a planet!
Relevant industry News announcing exciting industry developments, reviews and products is available for each of the planets.
MOS is currently in the throes of filling key lead roles on Planets (Governors) and Starships (Captains).
You, yes you are going to be consulted on how the MOS Universe is shaped, this gig is hands on.
A current example is a discussion about potential Governors for Planet Sirius (inhabitants are gamers, game testers & game developers) which can be found here, names like David Jaffe (Twisted Metal Black {Designer} & God of War {Director} fame) and Gabe Newell (Valve's co-founder) have been nominated. You get the opportunity to vote on and/or add to this list. This is real my friend, as unbelievable as it seems. As I have said previously, it is BIG …
Join a Planet NOW if you have not already; we need you as a new recruit!
To those already here, welcome citizen and MOS hopes to soon be welcoming you aboard a Starship!
Creating an account
- If you already have a Facebook account, you can create a MOS account via the 'Connect with Facebook' button on MOS’s frontpage.
Just fill out your Facebook email address and password, enter your preferred MOS profile/avatar name and a few more details & voila you are a MOS citizen. This will bring across your Facebook profile avatar image, your latest FaceBook 'status' entry and your Facebook signup email address as well. You can then in future continue to use the 'Connect with Facebook' button and enter your Facebook credentials when you want to login into your MOS account. You will have the option to ‘import profile status’ and/or ‘import profile avatar’ at this time as well.
- If you don’t have a Facebook account then click on the ‘Join Us Now, It’s Free’ button on MOS’s front page and just step though the registration process.
On entering the MOS Universe you have a choice: - If you are a Sci Fi fan and are looking for a purely social MOS experience and/or want to have a look around and familiarize yourself with the MOS Universe you can choose to become a Galaxy member. Note: Being a Galaxy member initially will not exclude you from becoming a MOS planet member (under a different Profile) at a later date. - If on the other hand you are a skilled entertainment industry member and looking to participate in entertainment industry commercial projects then become a citizen of one of the planets of MOS. There are 6 Planets (inhabited by skilled citizens of different entertainment industry genres) and 6 Starships (crewed by a collection of citizens from the various Planets that gather to work on a mission/project).
Basics
- Firefox is the preferred browser for MOS!
That fact, basic tip numero uno, right there will help solve/prevent issues when using MOS. My work here is done, thankyou and goodnight ;) No wait, come back, only joshing, there’s much more to come … read on and learn the power of MOS.
- Myouterspace.com is effectively, at this point in time, at the “Beta” stage (it is right there in the header image of the site), i.e. the testing stage of development that has been released to some lucky users (you guys) before its official release to the public.
If something doesn’t work the first time you try it, as the saying goes; try, try again. If there is something really bugging you :) you can place a wall post on an appropriate Planet/Galaxy discussion, for example the MOS Website Suggestions topic which is on the Galaxy discussion forum. The discussions are monitored by people who can do something about it and several of the suggestions have already been incorporated into MOS. So don’t be a sooky lala :), get on with it and use the site … fixes and features, if you are observant, are being added daily!
- Patience – a lot is happening ‘behind the curtain’ with MOS, everything cannot be responded to or announced immediately. With the passage of time things will become clear … in the meantime contribute to the greater good of MOS and get to know your fellow citizens.
- Familiarise yourself with the MOS ‘Terms of Use’. The TOU can be found linked under the Help menu at the top of the MOS browser window.
- To get back to your citizen homepage which is your profile page from anywhere on MOS choose Members > My Profile from the MOS menu at the top of your MOS browser window. This also allows you to catch up on what your friends have been up to, as an event list is displayed there.
- Maintain your profile via Profile > Edit profile, this is how other MOS citizens get to know you.
- Applications > Group (from homepage) = Access to Discussion Forum(s). There is one forum per planet (there are 6 Planets and one Galaxy). Choose a planet /Galaxy, click on the ‘Join the group’ button (only have to do this once per planet/Galaxy) which is to the far right of the planet image...and away you go!
- Upload samples of your work, this increases your profile and encourages ‘like minded folk’ to request to be your friend. Refer to ‘Adding content’ section of this guide for how to achieve this.
- Choose your level of privacy, Profile > Privacy
- News from the various planets is accessible via the MOS menu at the top of your MOS browser window.
- Karma – “big karma points are gained for Uploading new photos, posting on group walls and discussions”. It can be seen as an indication of your activity level in the MOS Universe. The MOS KarmaRank™ calculation is up there with the Google PageRank™ algorithm and about as secret ... so don’t ask ;)
- Spread the word - do your friends a favour and introduce them to MOS and all its nuances. You can now link/post the MOS front page video to your facebook and twitter accounts, embed it into websites and share it via the buttons on the right-hand edge of the front page featured video.
Communicating with others
- You can find and make friends initially using the Friends > Search (or Advanced Search) menu from your homepage or in the MOS right-hand panel, click on their username or avatar picture to view their homepage and if you feel you have shared interests with them click on the ‘Add as friend’ text in the menu below their profile picture. In the ‘Add new friend’ window that pops up, type in some introductory text, best to include something short about yourself that would be of mutual interest after reading their profile info. Click on ‘Add Friend’.
Now sit back relax have a cup of your preferred special blend and wait to be added as a friend or have a search for another potential friend and invite them into your world!
- To write a message (basically an internal MOS email which you can reply to as an on going thread under your homepage ‘Inbox’ menu) to a friend, navigate to their homepage via Friends > Show all menu, click on their username or avatar picture and once their homepage is loaded, click on the ‘Write message’ text in the menu below their profile picture.
- When you get a friend invite you can peruse their homepage by right-clicking on their avatar picture and select open in new tab. Good form is to accept the invite and interact with your new friend. You can always un-invite them later on by clicking on the red cross to the right of their info box in your friend list which is available from the Friends > Show all menu on your homepage.
- Chat - Click on a username in the ‘Live Chat’ interface in the panel at the right of the MOS browser window to have a real time chat with them if they are available. At the top of the interface, you can choose your status as Available, Away or Invisible.
- Walls - Use your friends and other MOS members walls, which is at the bottom of their homepage to give them feedback or an encouraging word. Comment and contribute on Governor & Captain homepage walls.
Comment and contribute on Planet discussion forum walls.
- Update your (social) networking information on your homepage via the Profile > Edit profile menu, to add your twitter, facebook etc social networking info.
- You can also catch up on your friends twittering via their profile, William Shatner’s is accessible here.
Adding content
- Make sure you read the MOS ‘Terms of Use’ (especially clauses 6, 7 & 8) just so everyone knows where they stand, before adding content to MOS. It will save everyone time and effort wading through un-MOS-related guff. The TOU can be found linked under the Help menu at the top of the MOS browser window.
- Personal influences; such as MP3 music, videos and photos, can be mentioned and linked to in a blog entry thus freeing up MOS for personally created content.
- Blogs – Write a blog entry via the Blog > Write Blog menu from your homepage, give it a title and use the WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) interface provided to enter some text.
Save the blog entry as unpublished (you have to select the Unpublish option as the default is Publish) while you are editing it and when you are ready to pull the trigger … save with the Publish option set. Otherwise all your friends will see your drafting process and if it is as painful as mine…not a good thing. If you use Micr*s*ft W*rd (not that I am endorsing it), the ‘Paste from W*rd’ button on the right-hand side of the blog interface toolbar may save some grief. You can view your blog via the Blog > View Your Blog menu from your homepage.
- MOS MP3 player – get your music heard by adding .mp3 music files with the ‘+’ button on the bottom left of the players interface. You can set the music to auto-magically start playing (and to repeat your playlist) if you desire when you or anyone else visits your homepage via the spanner button on the bottom left of the players interface.
For a comprehensive introduction to the MOS MP3 player click here for SaM HiLL’s excellent ‘MOS MP3 player guide’. A link to SaM HiLL’s guide can also be found in the help menu at the top of every MOS browser window.
- Walls - Use your friends and other MOS members walls, which is at the bottom of their homepage to give them feedback or an encouraging word. Comment and contribute on Governor & Captain homepage walls.
Comment and contribute on Planet discussion forum walls.
- Add videos via your homepage Applications > Videos menu
- Add photos via your homepage Applications > Photos menu
- Posting PDF files - for a comprehensive rundown on posting PDF files for MOS citizens to access click here for SaM HiLL’s excellent ‘Posting PDF files’ guide. A link to SaM HiLL’s guide can also be found in the help menu at the top of every MOS browser window.
Applications
- To use/experiment with applications, for example the ‘Favourite Friends’ application. Use the Applications > My Applications menu from your profile homepage menu to add, access and change the setting for the applications.
I will expand this section when I have time and have weened myself off treeman’s special blend tea which I hadn’t tried before MOS came along. In the meantime I’m sure you will work it out just fine.
Galaxy
The MOS Galaxy is where Sci-Fi Fans and MYOUTERSPACE observers participate in discussions, view videos, and communicate with the MYOUTERSPACE community. The Galaxy is created for fans who may not be in the "creative" fields, but would still like to be part of this adventure called MYOUTERSPACE. You can find out more about THE GALAXY via the MOS menu at the top of your MOS browser window.
Access the Galaxy via Applications > Group (from member homepage). Click on the Galaxy, click on the ‘Join the group’ button (only have to do this once) which is to the far right of the Galaxy image...and away you go!
Planets
A Planet is inhabited by a population of skilled people from a certain entertainment industry genre. Planet citizens may be recruited to any of the Starships, depending on the Starships mission (project). Each Planet has or will have a Governor to help guide citizens of that Planet.
You can find out more about THE PLANETS via the MOS menu at the top of your MOS browser window.
To post your question to the Governor of the individual Planet’s wall. You can navigate to the wall via MOS menu at the top of your MOS browser window. Select a Planet then select the Governor. The wall is at the bottom of the Captain’s homepage with a place to add a comment/question. Alternatively you can access the wall(s) directly via the links below or the Governor’s homepages are directly available at the bottom of every MOS page.

Starships
A Starship will be crewed with a collection of citizens recruited from the various planets in order carry out a given mission (project). Starships are independent from the planets and can call into any of the Planets to form a crew. The only way that you can become a Crewmember of a Starship is if the Starship Captain selects you. The Starships are going to consist of only those who are working on its final project, and if your talent stands out enough on your planet, you may be selected to work with a Starship Team. Each Starship has or will have a Captain to oversee its mission.
There are 6 Starships currently awaiting their missions, and the cool part is you get consulted about the missions before they head off.
You can find out more about the STARSHIPS via the MOS menu at the top of your MOS browser window.
To post your question to the Captain of the individual Starship’s wall. You can navigate to the wall via MOS menu at the top of your MOS browser window. Select a Starship then select the Captain. The wall is at the bottom of the Captain’s homepage with a place to add a comment/question. Alternatively you can access the wall(s) directly via the links below or the Captain’s homepages are directly available at the bottom of every MOS page.
The Starships and their current details are as follows:
Aurora Captain(s) = Unassigned Mission = In development
Endeavor Captain(s) = Unassigned Mission = In development
Genesis Captain(s) = Unassigned Mission = In development
Nautilus Captain(s) = Unassigned Mission = In development

Tips
- If you become a citizen of several planets because your talents span more than one, I am (you know how it is…a jack of many trades and master of none :), have a preferred ‘nom de plume’ and direct your other identity(s) ‘invite friend’ traffic to it unless they are a citizen of that identity’s planet and may in the future want to collaborate with you on a project. Check out my other usernames (LordVader, DarkLordOfTheSith & LiquidPurple {one of these is not like the others ;)}) to see what I mean. That way you can maintain your MOS presence mainly through your preferred ‘nom de plume’.
- Additional help is available via Help > FAQ via the MOS menu at the top of your MOS browser window.
I will update and add to this as we move along our journey through the MOS Universe.
Like anything in life, you only get out of MOS what you put into it. MOS is all about strategic friendships and networking, sharing of knowledge and having a heck of a lot of fun while doing it.
Welcome to the MOS Universe…there is nothing else like it!
Even better (shameless self promotion) Join the Darkside of the MOS Universe!
